LUCKY WINDOW, 2024. Louise Hessling’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.

The show illuminates the interplay between the artist’s aesthetic experiences, visceral responses and intuitive cognitive processes that enable her to alter design sense and knowledge into something new and unknown. She provides an interpretation of the artistic process as a form of intuition driven by emotional reactions to environmental stimuli and emerging formal solutions.

Exploring functionality in relation to the practicality of materials, their qualities and our surroundings, Hessling wishes to challenge her own assumptions and understandings about the values we assign different mediums, and how heritage and memories reflect onto that image. In her explorations, she has looked at everyday objects whose purposes are very clear - and transformed them into something abstract and sculptural.

‘For me, art and design is largely about exploring rituals, identity, aesthetics and questioning external circumstances’. -Louise Hessling.

During periods of research of her background and identity, she has often found tension, and within that tension she has carefully crafted works of art hidden behind conflicting images and fantasy. The stories she creates exist in a scenographic reality, giving shape to illusions, dreams and new beginnings.
